IndabaX Somalia 2023: Strengthening Somali Machine Learning
The 2023 IndabaX Somalia Conference was a landmark event, marking the first time such a gathering was held in Somalia since the chapter's inception in 2023. Hosted by Astaan Towers and Zamzam University of Science and Technology, this pioneering event focused on "Empowering Somali Machine Learning", aiming to leverage the power of machine learning and artificial intelligence to drive innovation, societal progress, and build a strong community of technology enthusiasts and researchers across the country.
The conference attracted a wide variety of participants, including students, professionals, and newcomers to AI. It created a collaborative and accessible learning environment, reflecting a commitment to inclusivity and diversity.
A highlight of the event was the first-ever 48-hour AI hackathon in Somalia, introducing participants to APIs and AI-powered solutions using OpenAI's API. Sponsored by OpenAI, the hackathon was a significant milestone in Somalia's tech journey.
Interactive workshops and sessions were conducted on Data Science with Python, APIs, ChatGPT 4, Deep Learning, and Computer Vision, led by local university speakers, providing insights into the latest industry trends.
Following the conference, the community has grown remarkably, with over 600 members now active in our WhatsApp group, reflecting the growing interest and engagement in machine learning in Somalia.
